Language Barrier

The more I pick up words and phrases of Japanese, the more I reflect on the words used in the languages I do know: English, Fiipino, and Hiligaynon (commonly refered to as Ilonggo).

For example:
English (e) - you (singular and plural)
Japanese (j)- anata, kimi, omai (s); anatatachi, kimitachi, omaira (pl)
Hiligaynon (h) - ikaw (s); kamo (pl)
Filipino (fil) - ikaw (s), kayo (pl)

E - I, me
J - watashi(neutral), atashi(f), boku (m), ore (m), etc.
H&Fil - ako

e - us, we
j - wareware, (add -tachi to the words for "I")
fil - kami (not including the one spoken to), tayo (including the one spoken to)
h - kami (ditto above), kita (including the one spoken to)

E - love
J - suki (like); koi (love)
Fil - gusto (like); mahal (love); pag-ibig (romantic love)
H - palangga (affectionate love); higugma / gugma (romantic love)

e - body
j - karada
fil - katawan
h - lawas

e-male
j- otoko, dansei, danshi
fil - lalake
h - lalaki

e - female
j - josei, on'na
fil - babae
h - babayi; bayi

e - song
j - uta
fil - awit, kanta, himig (this usually refers to tunes, though)
h - kanta

e - wait
j - matsu
fil - hintay
h - hulat

e - annoy
j - mendo
h - sabad
fil (no exact translation that I can think of) - iniinis (um, "inis" is "angry", but this is what is usually used when someone is annoying another)

e - water
j - mizu
fil - tubig
h - tubi / tubig

These are all I can think of right now.... I'll add more if they come to me... :)

I'm kinda fluent in conversational Filipino and Hiligaynon, and I'm kinda ashamed to say that I'm more fluent in English than either of the other two languages, though my first language is (supposedly) Hiligaynon. You see, in this country, English is the medium of instruction, and some schools even prohibit the use of the language (or dialect) of the area during school hours.

So, I didn't know how to count in Hiligaynon until I was about...um, 9 or 10, I think... And I didn't learn Filipino until I was in Grade 1 (7yrs old) I think... K2 (6yrs old) is the earliest time I could have been taught Filipino formally. Before that, all my education was in English. So, I can read English texts very quickly, but I read Filipino and Hiligaynon texts (the ones written in more formal language, anyway) at a snail's pace. If they're written in conversational language, it's ok, but the formal forms...defeat me.

Even so, I'm glad I was educated in English, because I can access so much more information with this language. If I was educated in, say, Hiligaynon, I would only be able to understand people in my area (Iloilo City, Bacolod, Capiz). If I were educated in Filipino, I would only understand the information translated into Filipino (national language of the Philippines).

This way, I can communicate with more people, and access more information. I have a good grasp of common Filipino and Hiligaynon, anyway, so I could communicate with people in my area, my country, and the world with these three languages. I would really love to add a fourth language (and a fifth, sixth, seventh....) to the list of languages I know, but that will take some time...I hope I can learn at least 10 languages by the time I go....but I'd be happy with 3 more (preferably French, Japanese, and Italian or Spanish) ;p

Andalucia de Akogarete

Andalucia de Akogarete

*poem before song

~After A Dream ~

In sleep, charmed by your image
I dreamed of happiness, a glowing mirage
Your eyes were gentler, your voice clear and strong
You shone like the sky lit by dawn
You called me, and I left the earth
To flee with you towards the light
The heavens opened for (the two of) us their clouds
Splendors unknown, divine brilliance glimpsed
Alas! Sad awakening from dreams
I call you: “O, night, give me back your lies!
Return in radiance once more
Return, oh mysterious night, once more”

*lyrics

I’m yearning for Andalucia
Dancing with a rose in my mouth
With Carmen from the underground bar
Tonight, at the Metro, a rendezvous

I put on my dark suit
And my stylish Borsalino hat
Just as I was putting on my nice shoes
The phone rang and stopped me

On the other end of the line was the Boss
He told me in a trembling voice
That things had become critical
The Tony guy messed things up

Stagary says we’ll settle this tonight at the harbor
At the no entry docking bay
Warehouse #3 at 8 o’clock

Someone please go tell my girl
She’s probably waiting there on the platform
Tell her that, although I’ll be a little late,
I’ll definitely get there, so please wait for me

(Inside the picture frame is a safe
I took out the gold hidden there
My hands are trembling
Surely, there’s no reason to be afraid

I got to the harbor by taxi
Even the Boss and the rest looked pale
When we noticed the atmosphere was strange
We had been surrounded

From the darkness, the machine guns
As if sneering, were fired
My Borsalino got hit and flew away
And I kissed the concrete floor)

An intense pain passes through my body
At lightning speed
The red blood that flows out
Reddens the hollow world

In my fading consciousness
I danced with Carmen
Under the blue sky of Andalucia
I heard the songs of Granada

Someone please go tell my girl
She’s probably waiting there on the platform
Tell her that, although I’ll be a little late,
I’ll definitely get there, so please wait for me

After The Flood: Random Thoughts

*written yesterday

I passed PGH on the way back to the dorm from Ian and Caesar's condo. There was no trace of last night's flood, except perhaps for the little puddles in the gutter. Otherwise, you would think last night never happened. The road, the sidewalk, everything, was dry as dust. What happened last night? How could a flood like that be gone without a trace so quickly? And how did it come to be in the first place? It was really strange seeing every bump, crack, and hole in the sidewalk, when last night we kept tripping and stepping into the holes we couldn't see. Now, they're all there, clearly seen in the murky gray light.

Granted, floods are a usual occurence in Iloilo. But still... There are usually puddles that serve as evidence of the recent flood.

-----

Tita Bern (Ian and Ryan's mom) really reminded me of Mama. She was so kind about me suddenly showing up in their condo, out of the blue. Granted, we arrived before they did, but still... She provided some toiletries that night, and even urged me to go ahead and eat that morning. So nice. She toasted bread, set out other things I might like, and generally acted like a mother.

I miss Mama. And I hope to be a good mom someday, like them. Getting nostalgic now....

----

So, Nang Steph also had some misadventures last Tuesday... Whew, I thought I'd just imagined the flood and everything that followed. Strange, isn't it? But then, sometimes I can't seem to tell the difference between dreams and reality these days...

Even if I can't get your love
I'll send my love with white snow

Translation:
Will this painful road to return continue forever?
The crack in my heart is filled up with snow
In the scenery
I've always been used to seeing, you are all that's there, visible in the city
I've never looked at before

*Even if my wish for love doesn't come true
'I love you'
I want to see you... I want to see you...
That is all I wish for.

I'll send these overflowing feelings to you
Placed inside the white snow...
Because the gently falling snow is
somebody's words of love

I'll send these overflowing feelings to you
Placed inside the white snow...
Because the gently falling snow is
somebody's words of love

Before long the snow will stop, the light is rising
Will you be able to understand?
As for me, I'll always be looking up to see
The snow that will not cease...

Even if I can't get your love
I'll send my love with white snow

Himala (Miracle)

Pangarap ko'y
Makita kang
Naglalaro sa buwan
Inalay mo
Sa aking ang
Gabing walang hangganan

Himala,
Kasalanan bang
Humingi ako sa langit ng
Isang himala?
Kasalanan bang
Humingi ako sa langit ng
Isang himala?

Pangarap ko'y
Liwanag ng umaga
Naglalambing
Sa iyong mga mata

Translated:
My dream is
to see you
playing with the moon
you offered
to me
the night without end

On earth, you can't find hope
pleading (just/with the moon)

Miracle
Is it a sin
if I ask heaven for
one miracle?
Is it a sin
if I ask heaven for
one miracle?

My dream is
the light of the morning
affection
in your eyes

Kisap-mata

nitong umaga lang pagkalambing lambing
ng iyong mga matang hayop kung tumingin
nitong umaga lang pagkagaling-galing
ng iyong sumpang walang aawat sa atin

Chorus:

(Chorus)

nitong umaga lang pagkalambing lambing,
nitong umaga lang pagkagaling-galing,
kani-kanina lang pagkaganda ganda,
kani-kanina lang pagkasayasaya
(Chorus)

Translated:
Just this morning, so affectionate
were your eyes that can glare so fiercely
just this morning, so good
was your promise that nothing would separate us

Chorus:
Oh, how fast your love fades, dear
Faster than the blink of an eye
It was there a while ago, why did it suddenly disappear?
Faster than the blink of an eye

Just a while ago, so beautifully
you said "I hope we are meant for each other"
just a while ago, so blissful
was my life which was suddenly destroyed
(chorus)

Just this morning, so affectionate
just this morning, so good
just a while ago, so beautiful
just a while ago, so blissful
(chorus)

Barbie's Cradle

Idlip
Sa pag-ikot ng mundong di mapalagay
Di mapigil and luhang kasabay
Subalit ikay nariyan kung akoy nasaan

Panaginip kailan kaya magigising
May suliraning nakaabang sa bawat tingin
Subalit ikay nariyan kung akoy nasaan

Wag wag wag kang aalis
Wag wag wag kang iidlip

Patawarin ang aking pagsasarili
Kung mawala ka di alam ang gagawin
Subalit ikay nariyan kung akoy nasaan

Wag wag wag kang aalis
Wag wag wag kang iidlip

Translated Idlip:
In the turning of the world that won't rest
The tears that come can't be stopped
but you're there where I am

A dream...I wonder when I will awaken
there's a problem waiting in every look
Don't, don't, don't leave
Don't, don't, don't Blink

Please forgive my selfishness
if you go, I don't know what I'd do
but you're there where I am

Don't, don't, don't leave
Don't, don't, don't Blink

Tabing Ilog by Barbie's Cradle
Sa ilog ang mundoy tahimik
Ako'y nakikinig sa awit ng hangin
Habang kayo'y hinihintay

Habang kayo'y hinihintay
Mata'y ngiti puso'y nananabik

Translated:
At the river the world is silent
I'm listening to the song of the wind
while waiting for you
whom I hope will come before dark

later, with you is the swing
a dream without end
the river brings promises
of your return

a smile that comes with the wind
tears that flow with the water in the river that doesn't keep secrets

at the river the world has a song
I wish the song of the wind won't change
while I'm waiting for you
my eyes smile, my heart yearns

"Sa Ayaw Mo't Sa Gusto"

Sa Ayaw Mo't Sa Gusto by Freestyle

ayoko na sanang umibig pang muli
lalo na't kakagaling sa pagkasawi
di na mabilang ilang ulit na akong nabigo
parang bata na napaso sa apoy na di matuto-tuto

ngunit nang makita ka'y hindi alam ang gagawin
iniiwasan ka pero nagpapapansin
magpahulog man ako'y baka wala ring mapala

walang magagawa
sadyang ganyan talaga
di maiwasan pang madala

(chorus, coda)

Translation:

I didn't want to love again
more so because I've just been betrayed
I can't count how many times I've been hurt
like a child who was burned in a fire but still doesn't learn

but when I see you, I don't know what to do
I avoid you, but try to catch your attention
even if I fall nothing might come of it
I'll force myself to think I don't want to do this anymore

but I can't stop myself anymore
here I go again
Oh, I feel so giddy
falling in love with you
whether you want me to or not

when you pass by,my heart always races
do I want to or don't i?
oh, I'm so confused

but when I see you, I don't know what to do
I avoid you, but try to catch your attention
even if I fall nothing might come of it
I'll force myself to think I don't want to do this anymore

but I can't stop myself anymore
here I go again
Oh, I feel so giddy
falling in love with you
whether you want me to or not

nothing can be done
it's just that way
I can't avoid being carried away

I can't stop myself anymore
here I go again
Oh, I feel so giddy
falling in love with you
whether you want me to or not

nothing can be done
looks like I've already fallen

Lost in Translation

I've developed a new fascination with translating Filipino songs into English. I'm not so fluent in Filipino, so...I'm not so sure if my translations capture the "feel" of the songs. This fascination was actually developed because of my current obsession with KAT-TUN, a Japanese boyband. So, I decided to translate some songs to get a feel of how it is to translate songs from one language to another. And I have to say, some things get lost in the translation. Some songs' lyrics end up sounding a bit silly. But oh well....
